Goodbye Sky Harbor… Hello New Year?
on January 18, 2012
Hey guys—since the world is ending this year, I figured it’d be a perfect opportunity to start blogging again. I’m going to do something different for 2012: in the past, I feel like I spent too much time on each post (indeed, they ended up being very long) and as a result, I didn’t post many updates. This time around, I’m not going to worry about being persuasive or try to make watertight arguments; instead, I just want to chronicle some unceremonious observations from my day-to-day life. They’re the things I found interesting and paused to think about. Or the things that triggered my unrelenting neuroticism. Same thing, really.
As you might have guessed from the title, this post concerns the Jimmy Eat World song “Goodbye Sky Harbor” from their 1999 album “Clarity.” It’s my favorite song (significant since the entire album is a gemstone necklace), but I never really understood what “Sky Harbor” was or what it referred to. That is, until, I read the back of my US Airways ticket this Saturday at the airport in Newark, waiting to board the 5:30pm flight to Charlotte. And there it was:
Mailing address: Customer Relations 4000 E. Sky Harbor Blvd. Phoenix, AZ, 85034
It all made sense! Jimmy Eat World fans will know that they are from Arizona, and if you recall the lyrics, I think you’ll agree that the song was written from the perspective of someone taking off from Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport. It’s been almost 10 years since I first listened to Clarity, and the album still gets rotation on my iPod to this day. It’s strange to think how many times I’ve said “Goodbye” to “Sky Harbor” without even knowing what it was.
